Fusidic acid is an antibiotic that is often used topically in creams and eyedrops but may also be given systemically as tablets or injections. Such infections may include impetigo and secondary infections (infections that develop after the skin has been injured) to burns or broken skin. Fusidic acid is a narrow spectrum antibiotic with a steroid like structure which prevents the translocation step of bacterial peptide synthesis by inhibiting factor G.The global problem of advancing antimicrobial resistance has led to a renewed interest in its use recently.
