Bithionol sulfoxide(Bitin-S) is a clinically approved anti-parasitic drug; has been shown to inhibit solid tumor growth in several preclinical cancer models.
Bithionol Sulfoxide is an active anthelmintic for the treatment of fascioliosis and paramphistomosis, and has good activity against adult Oesophagostomum and some cestodes (Thysaniezia, Moniezia). It is also acting as an intestinal disinfectant. It can be administered in pregnant and lactating females without any change of feeding .It is targeted on Cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, and poultry animals. Mostly Oral. Bithionol indicated for the effective treatment and control of liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica), Oesophagostomum, Paramphistomum, Tapeworms (Moniezia), Thysaniezia ovilla in cattle, sheep and goats. Bithionol interferes with the neuromuscular physiology of helminths /(the target species)/, impairs egg formation, and may cause the protective cuticle covering the worms to become defective. At the biochemical level, oxidative phosphorylation is inhibited, and the bithionol molecule can chelate iron so that it may inactivate iron-containing enzyme systems. For research use only. We do not sell to patients. Bithionol is an anthelmintic used to treat Anoplocephala perfoliata (tapeworms) in horses and Fasciola hepatica (liver flukes). Bithionol has antibacterial and anthelmintic properties along with algaecide activity. It was formerly used in soaps and cosmetics until the FDA banned it for its photosensitizing effects. The compound has been known to cause photocontact sensitization.
