Ceftiofur Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of ceftiofur, a semisynthetic, beta-lactamase-stable, broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin with antibacterial activity. Ceftiofur binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. PBPs are enzymes involved in the terminal stages of assembling the bacterial cell wall and in reshaping the cell wall during growth and division. Inactivation of PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall and causes cell lysis. There are products approved for cattle, swine and horses. In cattle there are indications for respiratory tract infections (caused byPasteurella multocidaandMannheimia haemolytica),E. colisepticaemia (in calves and in dairy cattle due to mastitis), acute metritis and interdigital necrobacillosis. The approved indications for swine are respiratory tract infections, periparturient hypogalactia syndrome (PHS, formerly called Metritis-mastitis-agalactia) and streptococci/staphylococci infections in piglets. In horses there are approvals for use In E. coli septicaemia and respiratory tract infections (caused byStreptococcus equisubsp.Zooepidemicus). In addition there are a few ceftiofur containing products authorised for use in one day-old chick
