Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from Streptomyces tenebrarius and used to treat various types of bacterial infections, particularly Gram-negative infections. It is especially effective against species of Pseudomonas. Tobramycin is used to treat or prevent bacterial infections including respiratory infections, wound infections, pneumonia, bladder infections, blood stream infections and infections of the skin and ear. Tobramycin is also used to treat certain eye infections. Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, has almost the same antibacterial spectrum as Gentamycin, but enjoys lower nephrotoxicity and otoxicity than Gentamycin. It has high antibacterial activity in Gram-negative bacteria, especially against Pseudomonas areuginosa. Besides, it exerts synergic effect in combination with Penicillins or Cephalosporins.
